Competitive Intelligence

"Get more reviews" is not advice. "15 of the 18 businesses ahead of you have more" is a measurement.

Generic improvement checklists tell every business the same thing. Rank Gap Analysis extracts the measurable differences between you and the businesses that actually outranked you in your scan, ordered by size.

What it's for

The question this answers

Compares you only against those ahead

Including businesses below you would make the gap look smaller than it is.

Uses the median, not the mean

One chain with thousands of reviews destroys an average and invents a gap that isn't there.

Shows the denominator

It says "15 of 18"; it never hides how many businesses were examined.

How it works

Three steps

  1. 1

    Those ahead are isolated

Only businesses that appeared above you in the scan enter the comparison pool.

  2. 2

    Measurable fields are compared

Review count, rating, photo count and profile completeness — each one separately.

  3. 3

    Thresholds applied, gaps ranked

Immaterial differences are dropped; what remains is ordered by size and written up step by step.

What you get

Every line carries a number and a source.

  • The measured gap, written as "median 8 / you 1"
  • How many businesses were examined — the denominator is always shown
  • Actionable steps, in order of materiality

FAQ

Questions we get

Why not use an average?

Because an average once gave the wrong answer. In a real scan the median of 16 competitors was 18 reviews while the business had 25 — it was ahead of 12 of them. One competitor's very high review count inflated the average and the system reported "you're 115 reviews behind". A median doesn't make that mistake.

What if there aren't enough competitors?

If the sample is below threshold, no comparison is made. A gap derived from too little data misleads more than no gap at all.

If I do this, will my ranking improve?

Memin doesn't guarantee rankings. Closing measured gaps closes the distance to the businesses ahead of you; Google's ranking also weighs factors beyond these. The way to see whether anything changed is to scan the same keyword again.
