Google Business Profile Suspension: Why It Happens and How to Recover

Soft and hard suspensions, the most frequent causes, how the appeal works, and how to measure what the outage cost once the profile is back.

When a profile is suspended you disappear from map results completely. The reviews are still there, the data is still there, but the business is not in search.

There are two kinds, and they mean different things.

Soft and hard suspension

Soft suspension: the profile keeps appearing in search results, but your management access is restricted and it drops to unverified. It usually follows a change that broke a rule.

Hard suspension: the profile is removed from search and from the map entirely. It follows serious or repeated violations.

Telling them apart is simple: search your business name on Google. If the profile still appears, it's soft. If it doesn't, it's hard.

The most frequent causes

Keywords in the business name. The number one cause by a wide margin. Nothing that isn't on the sign belongs in the name.

A virtual office or coworking address. When hundreds of listings share one address, that is visible very quickly.

Leaving the address public on a service-area business. If you travel to customers, the address must be hidden.

Category that doesn't fit the address. A retail shop or restaurant registered at a residential address.

Too many changes in a short window. Changing name, address and category in the same week triggers review.

Creating a second listing. A duplicate profile for the same business puts both at risk.

The appeal process

The order matters, and most people get it backwards: fix first, then appeal.

  1. Identify the cause. It is almost always on the list above.
  2. Match the profile information to physical reality. Whatever the sign says is the name.
  3. If you're a service-area business, hide the address.
  4. Fill in the appeal form and attach evidence: a photo of the signage, a lease, a utility bill, a registration document.
  5. Wait. The timeline varies, and filing a second appeal doesn't speed it up — it slows things down.

Appeal without fixing and the appeal is rejected, which makes the second one harder.

The one rule that prevents suspension

Every piece of information on the profile should match what someone standing outside the premises would see. The name on the sign, the number on the door, the work actually performed.

That single rule covers every cause listed above.

What to do once it's back

A reinstated profile doesn't return to its previous position instantly. The only way to know how much of the lost visibility has come back is to measure it: split the area into a grid, search from every point, and repeat weekly.

If you took a measurement before the suspension, you have something to compare against. If not, there is nothing to do but guess whether the recovery is complete. That is the most concrete reason to measure regularly while the profile is healthy.
