Why Analyse Competitors at All?

Optimising your own profile is not enough to rank well on Google Maps — you also need to understand what the businesses above you are doing. Analysis is the shortest route to overtaking them where they are strong and exploiting the areas where they are not.

Identify Your Real Competitors

Your real competitor is not the business most similar to you in product or service. It is the one beating you in the search results your target customer actually looks at. Who occupies the top three for "barber in Shoreditch"? Those are your competitors.

To build the list:

  • Search Maps for your target keywords
  • Note the first five to ten results
  • Examine those businesses' profiles
  • Compare review counts, ratings, photos and posting frequency

What to Look At

Review Count and Average Rating

Businesses at the top usually have both a high volume of reviews and a strong average. Competing on 20 reviews at 4.3 against a rival with 100 reviews at 4.8 is hard work. Closing that gap requires a systematic process for collecting reviews.

Photo Quality and Quantity

Google treats profiles that add photos regularly as more active. Check how many photos your competitors have and how often they refresh them. Professional shots consistently earn more clicks than phone snaps.

Category Selection

The primary and secondary categories a competitor chooses directly affect which searches they appear in. A GBP allows up to ten secondary categories — looking at what your competitors picked often reveals categories you have overlooked.

Posting Frequency

Active businesses publish GBP posts regularly. Those posting at least weekly tend to sit noticeably higher than those who never post.

Website Authority

Maps ranking does not depend on profile optimisation alone. How strong is the competitor's website? Backlink count, site speed and mobile-friendliness all feed in.

Watch the Geographic Differences

A competitor may be ahead of you in some neighbourhoods and behind you in others. You cannot see the full competitive picture without that view. Grid-based map scans visualise both businesses' positions across the city and show precisely where each of you is strong.

Turning Analysis into Action

Once the analysis is done, ask three questions:

  1. **What does my competitor have that I lack?** (Missing categories, too few photos, a low review count)
  2. **Where are they weak?** (Ignoring negative reviews, stale photos, out-of-date opening hours)
  3. **Where are they geographically weak?** (Ranking differences by neighbourhood or district)

The answers set your optimisation priorities. Their weak spots are your opportunities; their strong practices are worth copying.

How Often Should You Do This?

Local SEO moves. Competitors gain reviews, update profiles, and Google's policies change. A monthly review keeps you ahead of the shifts.

Measure your own business

A grid scan shows where you are listed, point by point.
